Dark-Winged Angels

Spanish painter Francisco de Zurburan (1598-1664) painted The Annunciation in oils on canvas. Notice that the angel has gray wings. Angels with dark or brightly colored wings were quite common until sometime in the 1800s. Some angels even had butterfly wings.
